- Assisted automation: AI integrated into a workflow where it performs specific steps (extract, classify, draft) but humans retain control over decisions and progression. Appropriate for most current enterprise use cases.
- Supervised agents: AI systems that take multi-step actions and use external tools, but with human checkpoints at key decision points. The right approach for complex tasks where errors are recoverable.
- Autonomous agents: AI systems that operate end-to-end with minimal human intervention. Appropriate only for well-defined, low-risk tasks where errors are detectable and reversible.
Most organisations currently in their AI journey will find the most value in the middle of this spectrum: AI-assisted workflows and supervised agents, where significant automation is achieved while humans retain meaningful oversight.

Specific use cases where agents add clear value include: research and due diligence (multi-source information gathering and synthesis), complex document processing (multi-step extraction, validation, and routing), customer inquiry resolution (multi-turn conversation with access to internal systems), and operational monitoring (continuous observation with conditional action-taking).
The right question is not whether to use agents, but which specific tasks benefit from multi-step autonomous action — and whether the current maturity of your data and processes can support reliable agent behaviour.
When AI Agents Are the Wrong Choice

A common failure pattern is deploying agents in environments where data quality, process stability, and exception handling are insufficient — and then attributing the resulting errors to AI technology rather than implementation design. Agents amplify both good and bad inputs.
Building an Agent Strategy: Start Small, Prove Value, Expand

Practically, this means: identifying one task in your organisation where multi-step AI action would save significant time or improve quality, designing the agent with clear boundaries (what it can and cannot do autonomously), building monitoring and human oversight into the design from the start, and measuring against a pre-agreed baseline.
AI agents represent a genuinely powerful capability — but the power is proportionate to the quality of the design, data, and governance surrounding them. Organisations that approach agents with clarity about what they are, realistic assessment of where they add value, and proper implementation discipline will find them transformative. Those that deploy agents as a novelty without these foundations will find them a source of errors and rework.
