Wat AI-Agents Werkelijk Zijn en Wanneer Ze Zinvol Zijn What AI Agents Actually Are — And When They Make Sense for Your Organisation

Few terms in the AI landscape are used more loosely than 'AI agent.' Vendors apply it to everything from simple chatbots to fully autonomous decision-making systems. The result is confusion about what agents actually are, what they can do today, and when they represent genuine value rather than impressive technology in search of a problem. This article cuts through the noise.

The Definition That Actually Matters

De definitie die er werkelijk toe doet

An AI agent is a system that perceives its environment, makes decisions, takes actions, and observes the results of those actions in pursuit of a defined goal — often with minimal human intervention in individual steps. What distinguishes an agent from simpler AI tools is its ability to: take multi-step actions autonomously, use tools (web search, databases, APIs, code execution), adapt its approach based on intermediate results, and work towards a goal rather than simply respond to a prompt.

A chatbot that answers questions is not an agent. A system that receives a research brief, searches multiple databases, synthesises findings, identifies gaps, conducts additional searches to fill them, and produces a formatted report — that is an agent.

The Spectrum: From Automation to Full Agency

Het spectrum: van automatisering naar volledige autonomie

AI capability exists on a spectrum, and most practical enterprise applications sit somewhere in the middle rather than at the extreme ends:

Most organisations currently in their AI journey will find the most value in the middle of this spectrum: AI-assisted workflows and supervised agents, where significant automation is achieved while humans retain meaningful oversight.

When AI Agents Deliver Genuine Value

Wanneer AI-agenten echte waarde leveren

Agents are appropriate when the task requires multiple steps, involves using multiple information sources or tools, benefits from iteration (trying an approach, evaluating the result, adjusting), and where the cost of human coordination between these steps is significant.

Specific use cases where agents add clear value include: research and due diligence (multi-source information gathering and synthesis), complex document processing (multi-step extraction, validation, and routing), customer inquiry resolution (multi-turn conversation with access to internal systems), and operational monitoring (continuous observation with conditional action-taking).

The right question is not whether to use agents, but which specific tasks benefit from multi-step autonomous action — and whether the current maturity of your data and processes can support reliable agent behaviour.

When AI Agents Are the Wrong Choice

Wanneer AI-agenten de verkeerde keuze zijn

Agents are not appropriate for every task, and the current enthusiasm for agentic AI is generating some poorly conceived implementations. Agents are the wrong choice when the task is simple and single-step (use a basic AI tool instead), when errors are costly and hard to detect (maintain stronger human oversight), when the underlying data is unreliable (fix data quality first), or when the workflow has too many exceptions for reliable autonomous handling.

A common failure pattern is deploying agents in environments where data quality, process stability, and exception handling are insufficient — and then attributing the resulting errors to AI technology rather than implementation design. Agents amplify both good and bad inputs.

Building an Agent Strategy: Start Small, Prove Value, Expand

Een agentenstrategie bouwen: klein beginnen, waarde bewijzen, uitbreiden

The right approach to agent adoption mirrors good AI adoption generally: start with a specific, well-defined use case where the value is clear, the risks are manageable, and success is measurable. Build and deploy, measure performance, and use the learning to guide the next deployment.

Practically, this means: identifying one task in your organisation where multi-step AI action would save significant time or improve quality, designing the agent with clear boundaries (what it can and cannot do autonomously), building monitoring and human oversight into the design from the start, and measuring against a pre-agreed baseline.

AI agents represent a genuinely powerful capability — but the power is proportionate to the quality of the design, data, and governance surrounding them. Organisations that approach agents with clarity about what they are, realistic assessment of where they add value, and proper implementation discipline will find them transformative. Those that deploy agents as a novelty without these foundations will find them a source of errors and rework.

Visser & Van Zon designs and implements AI agents as part of our AI Tools & Agents service. We help organisations identify where agents add genuine value and build them with the governance and quality controls that make them reliable in production. If you're evaluating agent adoption, we'd be glad to discuss your specific context.
